  • Slushie Recipe

As the weather warms up and spring quickly approaches, I’m dusting off my blender to whip up some of my favorite frozen treats. This fruit slushie is exactly what I picture when I think about how I’ll spend the coming months. Whether it’s poolside on a lazy Saturday or recovering from a good workout, it’s a refreshing and quick-to-prepare beverage that will keep me hydrated and happy through the dog days of summer.

If, like me, you grew up in a warm climate, you probably had your fair share of slushies. My dad would often take my sisters and me out to grab one, and it was always a fun treat. I remember when I was eight, I tried making my own version of a grape slushie by blending frozen grapes, a couple of heaping spoonfuls of sugar, and some ice. The result was…interesting, shall we say. If I recall correctly, my dad kindly pretended it was delicious. But this recipe is a foolproof treat every time. Best of all, you can customize your slushie to your liking and decide whether to add sweetener.

Are Slushies Healthy?

This fruit slushie is naturally dairy-free and packed with fiber and other nutrients, which will vary depending on the fruits you choose. For example, raspberries are a very fiber-dense fruit and work wonderfully in this recipe. The naturally occurring sugars in fruits will also vary; mango and pineapple will make for a sweeter slushie, while strawberries and blackberries are much lower in sugar. If you want to sweeten your slushie without adding sugar, try using monk fruit sweetener or stevia leaf extract.

What’s The Difference Between A Slushie And A Smoothie?

While both slushies and smoothies are fruit-based blender drinks, they have a few key differences. One of the main differences is that smoothies typically have a creamy element, which often comes from yogurt, milk, or even bananas. Slushies, on the other hand, are made by blending fruit or fruit juice with ice for a lighter beverage.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Because they’re partially frozen, slushies don’t store well. If you do have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 to 2 days, then blend with additional ice before serving. Slushies can also be frozen in an airtight container for 10 to 12 months. Let it thaw at room temperature for an hour and re-blend it with additional ice.

How Can I Make My Slushie Less Icy?

For a smoother consistency, try blending the fruit with a small amount of sparkling water before adding ice. This will help break down the fruit and make the texture a bit more uniform. Also, using frozen fruit helps create a creamier slushie without needing to overload it with ice.

How Can I Transform This Into A Frozen Cocktail?

If you’re in the mood for a fun frozen cocktail, whether for yourself or to share with friends, you can easily add a splash of your favorite rum or tequila to this slushie.

What Are Some Good Flavor Combinations For My Slushie?

There are several fantastic pairings and combos I highly recommend. One slushie I make often includes frozen mango, frozen pineapple, 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder, and just a pinch of cayenne. For an ultra-hydrating option, you could blend cucumber, mint, and frozen coconut water ice cubes for an electrolyte-packed slushie. Lately, I’ve been loving triple berry slushies made with frozen raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, fresh lime juice, and a kiss of maple syrup. Another popular combo is strawberry, basil, and lemon. The slushie possibilities are seemingly infinite.

Serving Suggestions

Depending on the occasion, there are numerous ways to enjoy this slushie. If you’re drinking it as part of a quick midday snack or light meal, you could make this Avocado Egg Sandwich, Honey Garlic Roasted Chickpea Wrap, or these Spicy Tuna Bites for some yummy protein. I think this Cucumber Sandwich recipe would be another delicious option. For something on the meatier side, I love this Chicken Pesto Sandwich.
