When I was younger, there were few meatless options that actually tasted good. If you were vegetarian, you’d order food without meat. And if you were vegan? Well, let’s just say you probably didn’t dine out much. Despite never having tried one of these diets myself, the idea always intrigued me. Once my sister went vegetarian, I became especially keen on finding delicious food options that fit her dietary preferences. 

Nowadays, there are delicious and nutritious vegetarian substitutes! I often find myself ordering vegan options anyway because they genuinely sound delicious!

One of my favorite vegan delicacies has become falafel. It’s a meat substitute made primarily of chickpeas with a fantastic flavor and texture. Falafel is great for nuggets, pita, and, of course, burgers.

This falafel burger recipe includes fresh produce, whole-wheat buns, and a flavorful patty. It’s a healthy, vegan-friendly, and loved-by-everyone meal that might just become your new favorite!

Are These Falafel Burgers Healthy?

Falafel, which is made with chickpeas, is incredibly healthy because it contains fiber, protein, micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, the patties are baked, rather than fried, making them lower in fat. When you top this super patty with fresh veggies and serve it on a fiber-filled whole-wheat bun, you’ve got a pretty healthy dish. While there aren’t any major subs for this dish, feel free to swap the bun with a gluten-free alternative. Or ditch the carbs all together and wrap this burger in lettuce instead!

How To Prepare The Perfect Falafel Burger

There is definitely an art to achieving a gold medal-worthy falafel patty burger. For starters, you’ll want to make sure your patties aren’t too thick. All you need to do is portion your mixture using an ice cream scoop (or eyeballing it). Then, flatten your scoops out. I like to put the portions between parchment paper, gently flattening them with a spatula—you can also use your hands.

After you’ve shaped your thin patties, you might want to put them in the fridge for half an hour or so to allow them to chill and harden. Falafel is very delicate, and you don’t want the patties to fall apart before you bake them. This step is especially important if you choose to fry them instead, which, of course, you can. As long as you follow these simple steps, your patties will come out beautifully golden brown!

How To Make Ahead And Store?

You can assemble your falafel patties and store them in the freezer for about 3 months. Make sure to separate them with a piece of parchment paper so they don’t stick.

Once baked, the patties can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days, but keep them separate from buns, condiments, and other toppings.

Serving Suggestions

Falafel Burgers go great with healthy but decadent sides. Try Air-Fryer Sweet Potato Fries, Fried Zucchini Sticks, or Baked Onion Rings with your burger! Plus, this Blooming Onion Sauce makes for an excellent condiment on your burger or as a dip for your sides.

Ingredients

  • 1 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 red onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour
  • Whole-wheat burger buns
  • Lettuce tomato, cucumber slices for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a food processor, combine chickpeas, red onion, parsley, cilantro, garlic, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt. Pulse until mixture is coarsely ground.

  • Transfer the mixture to a bowl, add chickpea flour, and mix until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 patties and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then flip the patties and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until golden and firm.

  • Serve the falafel burgers on whole-wheat buns with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber slices.
