  • Coke Slushie

Like so many people I know, I’m guilty of loving those frozen slushie drinks that you often find at convenience stores and fast-food chains. I can still remember the first time I tried a slushie, dispensed into a dome-lidded cup from a machine. It was just about the best drink I’ve ever had, at least as a kid. I know that soda isn’t the healthiest beverage. But sometimes you just need to treat yourself. Thanks to this recipe for a homemade Coke slushie, you don’t have to leave home to indulge your sweet tooth a little.

As long as you have an ice cube tray and a blender, you can make a homemade Coke slushie. The caveat is that you need to plan ahead a bit because the ice cubes made of Coke need a few hours to freeze. But if you can anticipate a hot day when you’ll want a cool, refreshing treat, or you plan on having some friends over and want to treat them to a nostalgic drink, you can have the Coke ice cubes ready ahead of time. Even without a fancy machine like the stores have, you can enjoy a Coke slushie any time you want to treat yourself to something special.

Are Coke Slushies Healthy?

As mentioned, soda isn’t the healthiest beverage. Though we use sugar-free Coke, it offers virtually no nutritional value. Even a sugar-free version of Coke shouldn’t be considered healthy because of the artificial sweeteners. This is why it’s best to enjoy a homemade Coke slushie only every now and then.

Infuse Your Coke Slushie With Other Flavors

If you want to make a simple Coke slushie even better, add an extra ingredient or two to the blender right before mixing the drink. My preference is to add a little maraschino cherry juice to replicate the taste of a cherry Coke. Depending on your taste buds, you could also squeeze some lemon juice or add a few drops of vanilla extract into the blender. In fact, any type of fruit juice, including orange and pineapple, are good options to blend with a Coke slushie. You could even try adding a spoonful of marshmallow fluff to make a “fluffy Coke,” although that will add to the sugar content in the drink.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

I would recommend drinking the entire Coke slushie as soon as you make it. However, any leftovers can be placed in a shallow dish and stored in the freezer. When you’re ready to serve it, break the frozen slushie into smaller pieces and put it back in the blender with a little more Coke or another liquid.

Can I Prep This Ahead?

The best way to prep for Coke slushies is to make extra batches of Coke ice cubes. If you have spare ice trays and enough room in your freezer, you can always have one or two trays of Coke ice cubes available. You can also pop the frozen cola cubes out of the ice cube tray and store them in a freezer bag until they’re needed.

Can I Use This Recipe With Other Types Of Soda?

Absolutely! Making a slushie drink with orange soda, root beer, or another type of soda is just as easy as making a Coke slushie.

Serving Suggestions

A Coke slushie is a wonderful treat to enjoy every now and then. But it does make sense to have a little snack along with it. I like to serve Coke slushies with nostalgic diner-style food. Try it with an Avocado Grilled Cheese Sandwich, a BLT Sandwich, Air-Fryer Potato Wedges, or Air-Fryer Nachos.

For something lighter, try sipping a Coke slushie with a healthy snack, like Protein-Packed Trail Mix or perhaps High-Protein Banana Bread.
