As far as I’m concerned, there’s no better way to leave behind the stresses of the day than with a good run. No matter what the weather, as soon as I come home from work, I’ll change into my running gear, put in my earbuds, and head outdoors to seriously pound some pavement. After an hour or so, my head is clear, I’m fully invigorated, and ready to face the world again. It’s a cherished ritual that keeps me healthy, both mentally and physically.

Rather than reaching for a protein bar or sugary sports drinks after my run, I’ll open the fridge and make a delicious smoothie with whatever I happen to have on hand—from fruit and veggies, to plant milks or yogurt. This banana-vanilla-orange smoothie has been my go-to treat these last few days, and it’s too good not to share. The taste reminds me of those orange cream popsicles I used to love so much as a kid. It’s subtly sweet, tangy from the citrus, and super creamy. A perfect treat after an evening run, or any time of day, for that matter.

Is This Banana-Vanilla-Orange Smoothie Healthy?

Absolutely! Made with healthy fruit, this smoothie is a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. If you’d like to make it a little creamier and boost the protein content, replace the orange juice with Greek yogurt or a plant-based milk. I especially like soy milk or almond milk in this recipe.

Nutritious Variations

The flavor profile of this refreshing smoothie is quite subtle, making it suitable for all kinds of delicious variations. I love adding a handful of baby spinach and a teaspoon of matcha powder to the recipe. Another great idea would be a tablespoon of chia seeds or flax seed for some omega-3s. And why not add in a teaspoon or two of raw cacao powder? Not only will it make your smoothie totally irresistible, but the chocolate provides additional antioxidants, too!

How To Make Ahead And Store

Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh, but they can also be stored for up to 24 hours in a mason jar or airtight container. I sometimes make them the night before and pour them into a thermos. That way, I can grab my nutritious smoothie on my way to work and drink it during my commute.

Serving Suggestions

If a smoothie alone won’t quite cut it after a long run, pair it with a Vegan Granola Bar or a Healthy Oatmeal Cookie. Looking for other great post-workout smoothies? Try this antioxidant-rich Blueberry Spinach Smoothie or this creamy Peanut-Butter Banana Smoothie.
