Whether you prefer to slather it on or drizzle it lightly, the sauce in this BBQ pork chop recipe is a rich, classic version made right in the comfort of your own kitchen. Ditch the store-bought stuff and use it to make this simple, sweet, homemade masterpiece to bring to your next family cookout. An American classic, this dish comes together in just 30 minutes and makes the perfect centerpiece for any picnic table.

These BBQ pork chops only take 10 minutes to prep and 20 minutes to grill, letting you kick back and relax for most of the cook time. Additionally, this main pairs well with a wide variety of sides and beverages, which is why it’s become a summertime staple. Gather the family and dig into this deliciousness.

Are BBQ Pork Chops Healthy?

This recipe can fit into a healthy diet. Pasture-raised pork, if you can find it, is an especially great option, providing both cleaner and tastier meat. Overall, this BBQ sauce is significantly healthier than store-bought because it doesn’t contain any processed sugar, preservatives, or an excessive amount of sodium. Feel free to experiment with the ingredients yourself to make any necessary adjustments based on your specific dietary needs.

One pork chop has 36 grams of protein, which is a win for those looking to build a little muscle and maintain healthy energy levels.

If you’re seeking vegetarian options, consider swapping out the pork for tofu or tempeh. The genius of this sauce is that it’s versatile enough to go with just about anything.

Where Does BBQ Come From?

BBQ stands for “barbecue,” a style of cooking meat over an open flame that comes from the Arawak word “barbacoa.” Many of us have come to know and love the culinary art of grilling (especially in the summertime), but the term and tradition actually originate from the Indigenous peoples of America, whose savvy cooking skills were later spread across the lands when Columbus and the Spaniards came to conquer and settle. So, it seems pork isn’t the only controversial aspect of this dish… the very way it’s cooked (on the barbecue) also has quite the “heated” history.

How to Make Ahead and Store

This recipe is great for marinating overnight, as it can let the juices soak into the raw meat, boosting the flavor and adding to its tenderness. Just make sure it’s in an airtight container, and cook as the instructions indicate when you’re ready. For already-made leftovers, store in the same refrigerated way for 3 to 4 days. Reheat by frying in some avocado oil on the stovetop until it’s thoroughly sizzling.
