  • Blueberry Banana Smoothie

I am currently in a reset season in my life, and part of the reset is clean eating and healthy movement. Another part of the reset is living in a more removed place (the desert dry land, to be exact) that reaches daily temperature of over 100°F. This has forced me to wake with the morning sun, and go for early runs before the heat becomes too unbearable.

So, by 7:30am, I circle the mountain cove, running in the desert heat. These runs feel like a bikram yoga class or pilates in a sauna. By the time I get back to the house, I am drenched in sweat and ready for something to eat, and there is nothing quite like a cold and refreshing smoothie.

The frozen fruit keeps it nice and cool, the banana adds the perfect amount of sweetness, and the almond butter gives it a nutty flair and balances out the sourness from the fruit. This blueberry banana smoothie is so simple to make, requiring only three ingredients, and makes for the best breakfast – runs or no runs! But I will say, having one after a run is the BEST.

Is a Blueberry Banana Smoothie Healthy?

Clean smoothies are one of the best ways to start your day. This smoothie is made with wholesome ingredients and comes together in no time. Bananas contain fiber, potassium, folate, and antioxidants. The frozen berries are a healthy source of fiber and natural sugars, with plenty of nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, vitamin K, potassium, and zinc.

If you don’t have any almond butter on hand, you can always blend in a few almonds or cashews for healthy fats and creaminess. I also love to add a handful or two of green spinach to my smoothies for added nutrients and a daily dose of greens.

Smoothies also present a great opportunity to mix in other supplements like collagen, chia seeds, or protein powder for added health benefits.

Different colors and flavors

The banana, blueberries, and almond milk make a great base for you to build off. The best part about smoothies is the different ways to mix and match them.

If you are not a huge berry fan, not to worry. Swap out the frozen berries and replace with frozen mango or pineapple, and transform your smoothie into a beautiful tropical sunrise. Add a handful of spinach and half a cucumber to the mix for a bright green dream.

You can also add a dash of cinnamon and vanilla extract for more flavor. Or, if you prefer a more creamy smoothie, replace the almond milk with a splash of coconut cream. You can also hold off on the nut milks and use coconut water for a lighter blend.

Sometimes I forget to freeze my fruits, and when that happens, I simply add a few ice cubes to the mix to keep that same cold, creamy texture.

How to Make Ahead and Store

You can make this blueberry banana smoothie ahead of time by blending together your ingredients then storing it in a mason jar in the refrigerator overnight. The smoothie may become a bit lighter in color and thicken up, so just give it a quick stir with a spoon or shake if stored in a mason jar before enjoying.

Serving Suggestions

A fresh and clean smoothie brings pure joy to my body. I feel grateful for the nutrients I am able to give to my body, and almost always feel accomplished. They help me get back on track with my clean eating, and act as reminders of how easy, tasty, and great healthy eating can be.

By starting your day with nutrient-dense foods like a smoothie, you’re more likely to make healthier food choices throughout the day. I like to enjoy my smoothie all on its own or with a cup of coffee to follow.

If you feel you need more food, pair your smoothie with a slice of Almond Butter toast, and add a drizzle of honey and cinnamon. Or a cup of Oatmeal and berries. You can also turn your smoothie into a Smoothie Bowl (like an Açai Bowl) by serving it in a round bowl and adding toppings like fresh banana slices, fresh blueberries, granola, nuts, and seeds.
