One of the best parts of eating low-carb is grilled meats. This Keto Steak With Garlic Butter Mushrooms will make you forget you ever wanted a potato on your plate!

From the outside, keto can sound like a real drag. No biscuits, bread, French fries, or even apples? Come on! What can you eat? Just chicken breast and artificial sweeteners?
Actually, keto can be a decadent way to live life if you play it right. For example, you can technically eat seafood and bacon to your heart’s content, and things like cream cheese and heavy whipping cream are a keto dieter’s dream. Berries are okay in moderation, and certain vegetables are very keto-friendly. Keto sweeteners have come a long way in the past decade, too. And you can eat all the steak you want.
Is there anything better than a medium-rare steak hot off the grill? In my opinion, nope. Nothing compares to a perfectly seasoned, properly cooked steak. Well, maybe if you pair it with garlic butter mushrooms. That’s what this keto steak recipe is all about: buttery, garlicky steak with juicy grilled mushrooms on the side. Steak itself is naturally low-carb, and it’s every bit as satisfying with garlic butter mushrooms as it is with garlic bread or fries on the side. This steak plate will make your non-keto friends wonder if they should give the diet a try!
Is This Keto Steak With Garlic Butter Mushrooms Healthy?
This steak dish is healthy in a few ways. It’s full of protein and crucial minerals like iron, and the top sirloin used in this recipe is a lean cut of beef, so it’s not nearly as fatty as, say, a rib eye steak. Mushrooms are full of important minerals, like selenium and copper, and provide fiber and several B vitamins. Garlic is the primary aromatic in this recipe, and it’s well-known for its heart-healthy benefits. Ghee is just as delicious as butter and able to withstand the high heat of a grill. But like butter, ghee does add saturated fat.
While this isn’t a low-calorie meal, it will fill you up and satisfy you. It’s free of gluten, and it’s quite keto-friendly (of course).

Notes On Making A Proper Steak
Steak is pretty simple to make, but if you follow just a few easy rules, you’ll get an unforgettable, juicy meal. Here are my most essential pointers for cooking a proper steak.
- Let it come to room temperature: A cold steak cooks differently on a hot grill than a room-temperature steak. Take out your steak at least an hour ahead of time and let it sit out with a paper towel over it until you’re ready to cook it.
- Salt your steak: When you take it out of the fridge, it’s a good idea to season it at that point, or at least give it a good all-over salting. The salt will permeate the meat as it comes to room temperature.
- Grill on indirect heat: You’ll be slathering your steak in ghee before it goes on the grill, and that ghee will catch fire if you put it on direct heat. So grill on indirect heat for this recipe.

How Do I Store Leftovers?
Store leftover steak and mushrooms in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag. But instead of freezing your leftovers, if you don’t have a lot, consider making fajitas, tacos, omelets, or sandwiches with your leftover steak and mushrooms. So good!

Recipe
Equipment
- Gas grill or charcoal, your choice!
Ingredients
For The Steak:
- 1 pound grass-fed top sirloin steak about 1½ inches thick
- 4 teaspoons ghee softened to room temperature
- 1 teaspoon fresh garlic minced
- Sea salt to taste
For The Mushrooms:
- 2 cups button mushrooms thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons ghee melted
- 1 teaspoon fresh garlic minced
- Sea salt
Instructions
For The Steak:
- Preheat your grill to high heat.
- Pat the steak dry with a paper towel. In a small bowl, combine 4 teaspoons of ghee and 1 teaspoon of fresh minced garlic, then spread half of the mixture all over one side of the steak. Sprinkle generously with salt.
- When the grill is hot, place the steak on the grill, butter side-down, and cook for 4-5 minutes. Rub the remaining ghee mixture all over the top side, flip the steak, and cook until your desired level of doneness. Remove the steak from heat, cover, and let it rest while the mushrooms cook.
For The Mushrooms:
- Combine the mushrooms, 2 teaspoons melted ghee, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Place two squares of foil on top of each other (shiny side inwards) and place the mushrooms in the center in a single layer. Wrap the sides up tightly to make a packet.
- Place the mushroom packet on the hot grill, so the folds of the packet are facing up, and grill for 5 minutes. Flip and grill another 4-5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender.
- Add the mushrooms to the top of the steak, and serve immediately.
Do you have to use Ghee or can you use real butter?
Hi Robert – Yes you can, it shouldn’t make much of a difference.
