  • Salami Sandwich

When I was a kid, I was absolutely obsessed with salami. I was raised in an Italian household where salami sandwiches were a staple in my lunchbox. My mom would bring home fresh salami from the deli and prepare the biggest sandwiches you’ve probably ever seen an 8-year-old consume!

I was also a very picky eater (no mayo and mustard for this kid) so, my mom had to get creative with toppings. While I didn’t like most condiments as a child, I did love cream cheese. Even though I’ve grown up, I still make this “gourmet” version of the classic salami sammie for myself all the time. And I think you’ll love it, too.

Unlike a traditional, plain lunch sandwich, this salami sandwich is packing some major flavor. With a rich and refreshing homemade cream cheese spread, fresh tomato and arugula, and a soft hoagie roll base, this is bound to be one recipe you make again and again. It makes for a light, yet filling, lunch on its own, or the perfect pairing to your favorite soup or salad, like this Split Pea Soup or this Kale and Chickpea Salad.

Is This Salami Sandwich Healthy?

As delicious and fresh as this salami sandwich is, it’s not exactly a “diet-friendly” lunch option. Salami is higher in calories than other deli meats and the cream cheese can be high in fat. However, there are still some benefits. Salami is a good source of protein and cream cheese is high in calcium and vitamin A. If you’d rather look for some healthier alternatives, consider swapping out the salami for a leaner deli meat. Cream cheese is also available in whipped form, which contains less calories per serving.

Homemade Cream Cheese Spread

It may surprise you to learn that the star of this salami sandwich actually isn’t the salami! The homemade cream cheese spread is what gives this sandwich its iconic, elevated flavor. To make the spread, mix together chopped fresh dill, sliced green onions, minced garlic and softened cream cheese. The result is a cool and refreshing spread that complements the savory salami and thick hoagie roll perfectly. If you have any extra cream cheese spread, it’s also delicious to save for a breakfast bagel sandwich.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 hoagie roll
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon green onion, sliced thin
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic, plus more to taste
  • 9 slices salami
  • 1 small tomato, sliced
  • Handful of arugula
  • Kosher salt, to taste (optional)
  • Black pepper, to taste (optional)

How To Make Ahead And Store

To store your salami sandwich for later, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for up to 5 days. If you’re spending the weekend meal prepping for the week ahead, these sandwiches are very easy to prepare in advance.

Serving Suggestions

Since this sandwich is so light, you can enjoy it with several different pairings. One of my favorite combos for lunch is a sandwich/salad, like this Spinach Salad or Low-Carb Keto Cucumber Salad. On a colder day, I prefer pairing my sandwich with a rich and cozy soup, like this Instant Pot Southwestern Sweet Potato Soup. You can also enjoy your sandwich with an Avocado Pesto Healthy Pasta Salad with Zucchini Noodles, which is sure to fill you up!

I’m also sure that just like my 8-year-old self, your kiddos will probably love this sandwich. Pack it in their lunchbox just like my mom did for me, and pair it with some fresh fruit slices, baby carrots, or a yogurt cup. Don’t forget the Homemade Potato Chips!
