Ingredients

  • 2 avocados
  • 1 large tomato
  • 2 pounds ground beef 80% lean / 20% fat
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices Swiss or pepper jack cheese
  • 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Prepare the avocado by slicing it in half, removing the seed, peeling it, and cutting it into slices.

  • Slice the tomato into rounds.

  • Preheat your grill or pan over medium-high heat.
  • Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into four 8-ounce patties, making them slightly larger than the buns. Press a thumbprint into the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

  • Grill the patties for about 4 minutes on the first side.

  • Flip the burgers, add a slice of cheese to each, and place the buns cut-side down on the grill. Continue cooking to your desired doneness, about 2 to 4 additional minutes for medium.

  • Assemble the burgers by layering lettuce, tomato slices, avocado slices, and the cheese-topped patty on the bottom bun. Cap with the top bun and serve immediately.
